Dura Europos
Dura Europos is part of the Tentative list of Syria in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
Dura Europos was a Hellenistic, Parthian and Roman border city built on the bank of the Euphrates river. 20th century excavations brought to light for example fresh wall-paintings in the Temple of Bel and well-preserved arms and armour belonging to the Roman garrison. The site was abandoned after its conquest in 256–57 AD and not built over by later generations, however Islamic State destroyed most of it between 2011 and 2014.
